The New Poetry

My name is Nicky Jones. I am a daughter, wife, mother, step-mother, ex teacher and psychotherapeutic counsellor. I live in the beautiful Welsh countryside, and over the past few years have devoted my time

to renovating my old stone house, walking my dog, a spaniel called Daisy, and to writing children’s stories and poetry.

I set up Copeland Books in 2008 because I wanted to help the other poets and writers…

Poem of The Month

Communion

He has plans
to cut the grass barefoot
this afternoon.
On his way out,
he invites me to take
from his garden,
to fill up my space,
and to my little one
he serves
a bowl of sliced bananas.
These are his offerings,
this self-loathing mess.

He hates himself
deeply enough to
decay from within.
He drinks poison straight
and on the rocks.
It might not be enough
to kill him today,
but it certainly may tomorrow.
I hear the mower
and notice he left
his glass one quarter full.

I cannot accept
his yellow flowers
because then I will have to
remember him.
Their bright facades
can only take root and spread.
My little one shoves
her half-eaten bananas aside,
proclaiming she's full.
"So am I," I say to her
as we walk down the drive,
fruit and flowers left behind,
"So am I."
